Years ago while I was at the Hazleton campus of Penn State, I met a guy that sold painted miniatures for a game called “Hordes of the Things”. I painted a few armies for him. The individual figures were attached to a base, four or five to a piece, some were on horseback others on foot. So an individual figure (for example, an Elvin archer) I think I painted 20 exactly the same. I also had a thing for using as may different colors as I could without making it look unnatural. At times I used as many as 20 different colors on a figure. I also mixed custom colors, but usually only for small details that I could paint quickly as mixing a color by hand is difficult if not impossible to do the same exact way twice. I was paid in credit for buying my own figures.

I once attended a RPG convention (I think it was over in Hershey, PA; though I’m probably wrong) that was sponsored by Warhammer games. They had a miniature painting contest, I won first place in every category except the Warhammer figure category (which I didn’t have an entry).

The other day I was going through a tote in my garage and I found some of them. There are others that I’m missing, although in the back of my head I’m thinking that I gave them away to friends that really liked them.

The years have taken there tole on the pieces (Balrogs sword was bent badly and when I straightened it, the paint came off… sigh), and many are chipped and worn. A couple of pieces were broken so badly I didn’t bother taking pictures. Many of the early pieces were never clear coated as a final step. Alas I have not found my paints as yet. They may be at my parents house, somewhere in the basement. Even if I do have them, they most likely are no good anymore. Most of the colors that I did have were Poly-S and there was a couple of tricks that I used to keep the paints fresh. Well, who knows, lets see if I can find them first.

UPDATE: Since I moved I have concluded that I will never see those paints again. Although I was talking to some people about Warhammer and I may look at getting more paints in the near future.

Well it is thenear future and I have been painting again. Some of the figures I removed the old paint and repainted. It took a little while to get back into the swing of things. I still have trouble getting dry-brushing to work the way I want it to. There are so many new products that didn’t exist 20 years ago. A friend gave me all his old figures and I took some time repainting some of them. I painted 17 skeleton warriors and just when I thought I was done. I found about 2 dozen more. There is so much more to do but I’m not in a hurry. I will add more pictures as I go. (Note: in the images. The figures from the beginning to the Fire giant were painted in the mid 90’s. Thereafter the figures are all since 2020.
